On October 14, 2023, an annular — or "ring of fire" — solar eclipse will occur in Klamath Falls, Oregon.

Klamath Falls is located not quite halfway to the center-line from the western edge of the eclipse path. The Running Y Resort's location is ideal for this incredible annular event.

Join the Running Y Resort and witness the brilliance that is a solar eclipse. Join us for an unforgettable experience that combines the excitement of an eclipse-focused event with the beauty of the natural surroundings.

This event is open to all ages — so gather your friends and family and mark your calendars for October 13th and 14th, 2023, only at Running Y Resort.

STAR PARTY — Friday, October 13

5:30 – 10:30 PM

Experience an illuminating event at Running Y Resort's Eclipse Into Nature — Star Party.

Esteemed Guest Speakers

Guest presentations from:

  • OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science and Industry)
  • Oregon Tech (OIT)
  • Local Native American Tribes — sharing their cultural perspectives on the cosmos

That tribal participation matters. The Klamath Tribes and their neighbors have observed and celebrated celestial events on this land for thousands of years before the first telescopes were built. Including their voices in an eclipse event in their ancestral territory is the kind of cultural integration Klamath events should always aim for.

Dinner, Cosmos, and Live Music

  • Delicious dinner provided by Food & Beverage Director Wayne Whitescorn
  • Interactive viewing exercise following dinner — learn more about the wonders of the night sky
  • Homemade desserts
  • Private reception accompanied by live music

This is a night you won't want to miss.

Cost: $150 per person · tickets are limited. See RunningY.com for more information and availability.

ECLIPSE INTO NATURE — Saturday, October 14

6 AM

Join us at Running Y Resort on Saturday, October 14, 2023, for the highly anticipated Eclipse Into Nature event.

This extraordinary experience will allow you to witness the annular solar eclipse in a breathtaking natural setting.

What "Ring of Fire" Means

In an annular eclipse — distinct from a total eclipse — the Moon is at a point in its orbit where it appears slightly smaller than the Sun as seen from Earth. So when the Moon moves between Earth and the Sun, it doesn't fully cover the Sun's disk.

Instead, you see a brilliant ring of sunlight surrounding the dark silhouette of the Moon — the "ring of fire."

It's a visually stunning effect that combines the dramatic alignment of a total eclipse with a uniquely bright, distinctive solar appearance.

The Klamath Falls Advantage

Klamath Falls sits along the path of annularity — meaning observers in the basin will see the full ring-of-fire effect, not just a partial eclipse. That puts the basin on the list of premier viewing locations in North America for this event.

Running Y Resort's outdoor setting — with wide horizons, dark skies (relative to urban areas), and uninterrupted views — is one of the best places in the basin to experience the eclipse.

The Event Will Feature

A wide range of programming designed for all ages, including:

  • Solar-viewing glasses for safe direct observation
  • Telescopes with solar filters for magnified views
  • Educational programming about eclipses, the cosmos, and the science of what we're witnessing
  • Food and beverage service
  • Family-friendly activities for younger attendees who want to engage at their level
  • A natural setting that adds significantly to the experience

Why You Should Go

Annular eclipses on this scale happen at any given location only rarely — often decades apart. The next major eclipse visible from Klamath Falls won't be for many years.

For families with kids: this is a generational moment. The kids in the basin who experience this eclipse will remember it for the rest of their lives — and may pass on stories about it to their own kids decades from now.

For adults: make a plan to be outside on the morning of October 14. Whether at Running Y, in your backyard, at a public viewing location, or anywhere with a clear view of the sky — be present for it.

Important Safety Note

Never look directly at the sun during an eclipse without proper solar-viewing glasses or filters. Regular sunglasses are NOT sufficient.

ISO-certified eclipse glasses can be purchased online or at participating retailers. Many libraries, schools, and event organizers (including Running Y) will be distributing them.

Camera lenses, binoculars, and telescopes also need proper solar filters — looking through any of those at the sun without filtering can cause permanent eye damage.
