Sometimes the best ideas are the simplest ones.

I was recently visiting with Isabel Rodriguez, a longtime friend, fellow real estate professional, and dedicated community volunteer, when our conversation turned to one of Klamath Falls' lesser-known treasures—the Klamath Tool Library. Isabel has been a strong supporter of the program for years and has helped spread awareness of its value throughout our community. After learning more about the Tool Library and the impact it has on local homeowners and renters, I knew it was a story worth sharing.

Homeownership can be one of life's greatest investments, but anyone who owns a home knows that maintenance and improvement projects never seem to end. One weekend it's repairing a fence, the next it's trimming trees, installing a sprinkler system, building raised garden beds, or tackling a painting project. While many homeowners enjoy the satisfaction of doing projects themselves, there is one common challenge: tools can be expensive.

How many times have you purchased a tool for a specific project only to use it once or twice before it ended up gathering dust in the garage? Many of us own tools that haven't been touched in years, yet they represent hundreds or even thousands of dollars in investment.

Fortunately, Klamath Falls has a resource that more homeowners should know about: the Klamath Tool Library.

Instead of every homeowner buying every tool they might someday need, community members share access to a large inventory of tools through a lending tool system. Just as you borrow books from a traditional library, members can borrow tools for home maintenance, landscaping, gardening, repairs, and do-it-yourself projects.

What began as a grassroots idea among a handful of friends who regularly shared tools with one another officially opened in the summer of 2017. Nearly a decade later, the Klamath Tool Library has grown into a valuable community resource with more than 1,700 tools and pieces of equipment available for members to borrow.

One of the most impressive features of the Tool Library is its online inventory. The website allows visitors to browse more than 1,700 available tools before ever stepping through the door.

As a Realtor, I often work with first-time homebuyers who quickly discover they need ladders, landscaping equipment, pruning tools, painting equipment, and a variety of specialty tools. Buying everything at once can be overwhelming and expensive.

The Tool Library offers a practical alternative. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on equipment that may only be used occasionally, homeowners can borrow what they need and invest their money elsewhere.

The benefits extend beyond simple cost savings. By making tools more accessible, the Tool Library helps homeowners maintain and improve their properties, which benefits entire neighborhoods.

Another advantage is environmental stewardship. Sharing resources means fewer tools need to be manufactured, purchased, and eventually discarded.

One aspect of the Tool Library that I particularly appreciate is its community spirit. Much of the inventory has been built through contributions from local residents. Many of us have tools that we no longer use regularly but that still have years of useful service left in them.

The Klamath Tool Library is located at 1221 Main Street in downtown Klamath Falls and is open Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Membership is available through a suggested annual contribution of just $25.

Volunteers help check tools in and out, maintain equipment, organize inventory, and assist members. The Tool Library also relies on contributions of tools, financial support, and volunteer hours to continue expanding its inventory and serving the community.

For information about membership, volunteering, contributing tools, or browsing the complete inventory, visit the Tool Library website by scanning the QR code included with this article, call (541) 363-7316, or stop by during open hours.

The next time you're planning a project around your home, consider checking the Tool Library before reaching for your wallet. You might discover that the tool you need is already waiting for you.

In a community built on hard work, self-reliance, and neighbors helping neighbors, the Klamath Tool Library may be one of the best bargains in town—and one of the most valuable investments we can make in each other.

The Tool Library's new permanent home at 733 East Main St. was purchased in December 2025 thanks to community support and is now under restoration, with plans to open in summer 2026.
