If you recycled your cereal box this morning, you're part of something bigger than yourself. Every day, residents across Klamath County make the same choice, creating a collective effort that keeps valuable materials in use and out of the landfill. Together, these everyday actions make a meaningful difference for our community and environment.
On Sunday, Nov. 15, communities across the United States will celebrate America Recycles Day. While recycling is something many of us do every week, this annual observance is an opportunity to pause, reflect and recognize our community's commitment to recycling. Recycling plays an important role in conserving resources, reducing waste and supporting a more sustainable future. America Recycles Day is a reminder that small actions taken consistently can make a big difference over time.
Focus on the basics
One of the easiest ways to recycle better is to focus on the basics. Recycling programs work best when residents place accepted materials into their recycling cart and keep contaminants out.
In Klamath County, recyclable materials include paper, cardboard, plastic bottles, metal cans and more. See your full recycling list here. Make sure containers are empty before recycling, and place materials loose in your cart.
When you're uncertain whether something belongs in the recycling, take a moment to check your local recycling guide. Recycling the wrong item can contaminate otherwise recyclable materials. A good rule of thumb is simple: when in doubt, check your guide.
Reduce waste before it starts
While recycling is important, reducing waste in the first place often has an even greater impact. Before making a purchase, consider whether the item is something you truly need, can borrow or can purchase secondhand.
Choosing reusable products is another easy way to reduce waste. Refillable water bottles, reusable shopping bags, travel mugs and durable food storage containers can replace hundreds of single-use items throughout the year.
WM believes that by taking small actions every day, individuals can make a meaningful impact on their communities and contribute to a more sustainable future. Throughout the month of November and beyond, WM is encouraging communities to take the I Recycle pledge.
A sustainable tomorrow starts today
America Recycles Day is more than a celebration of recycling. It is a reminder that each of us can make choices that reduce waste, conserve resources and support our community.
As November 15 approaches, take a moment to reflect on your own habits. Whether it's recycling correctly, choosing reusable products or reducing holiday waste, every small step helps create a cleaner and more sustainable Klamath County.
