According to research, four out of ten cancer cases in the United States are associated with preventable risk factors.
Excess body weight, poor diet, and physical inactivity are some of the key contributors to increased cancer risk. National Cancer Prevention Month — observed every February — is a reminder that small daily choices stack into something powerful over time.
This month, the YMCA of Klamath Falls is here to remind you that we're committed to helping you take charge of your health. No matter where you are on your wellness journey, the Y is here to support you every step of the way.
The Y's Cancer-Prevention Mission
The American Cancer Society identifies the highest-impact lifestyle changes for reducing cancer risk:
- Maintain a healthy weight through balanced nutrition and regular activity
- Stay physically active — at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week
- Eat a plant-rich diet with whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean protein
- Avoid tobacco in all forms
- Limit alcohol consumption
- Protect your skin from UV exposure
- Get recommended cancer screenings for your age and risk profile
The Y can help with #1, #2, and #3 directly — and our staff regularly connects members to the community resources that handle the others.
New Member Orientation
If you're new to the Y and not sure where to start, our New Member Orientation is the perfect first step.
We'll set you up for success by:
- Touring the facility with you so you know where everything is
- Walking you through the equipment — cardio, strength, free weights
- Introducing you to staff and trainers so you have names and faces from day one
- Helping you build a starting plan that matches your fitness level, schedule, and goals
A lot of people put off joining a gym because the thought of walking in alone feels overwhelming. The Y's orientation is built specifically to take that anxiety off the table.
Programs That Make Prevention Practical
Group Fitness — Yoga, Zumba, cycling, strength, water aerobics. Schedule-friendly classes for every fitness level.
Personal Training — One-on-one coaching from certified trainers who design programs around your goals and adjust as you progress.
Aquatics — Lap swim, swim lessons, water-based fitness for joints that don't tolerate impact.
Diabetes Prevention Program — An evidence-based, year-long program for adults with prediabetes. Proven to reduce risk of type-2 diabetes by more than half.
Healthy Living programs — Family-focused nutrition and movement programs that teach the whole household together.
Active Older Adults — Lower-impact programming for seniors keeping their independence and strength.
Stay Active. Stay Engaged.
Wellness isn't just physical — it's social too. The Y is one of the few places in Klamath Falls where you'll find six-year-olds in swim lessons, twentysomethings on weights, parents in spin class, and seniors in water aerobics — all under one roof, all on the same day.
That intergenerational, community-grounded environment is part of why the Y works. Members don't just get fitter — they get connected.
