March is National Nutrition Month — a perfect time to focus on making healthier food choices and fostering family connections around the table. At the Y, we're committed to helping your whole family develop nutritious habits that support overall well-being.

From fun, family-friendly cooking activities to expert tips on balanced eating, we're here to make healthy living easier — and more enjoyable — for everyone. Let's celebrate this month by fueling our bodies with the right foods and strengthening bonds with those we love.

Why Different Foods Matter

When kids (and adults) understand what foods do in our bodies, healthy choices become meaningful instead of mysterious:

  • Protein foods like eggs, chicken, and beans help grow and repair muscles.
  • Fruits & veggies give us vitamins and minerals to protect our cells.
  • Whole grains like whole wheat, oats, and brown rice give us energy.
  • Healthy fats like nuts, avocado, and olive oil support our organs.

Nine Tips for Family-Friendly Nutrition

1. Post a snack list on the fridge

Have a list posted of available, healthy snacks. When kids ask "what can I have?" — they have the answer in front of them.

2. Plate the rainbow

Aim for color variety at meals — different colored foods carry different nutrients. A plate with greens, reds, oranges, and a whole grain is naturally balanced.

3. Get kids involved in the kitchen

Children who help cook are more likely to eat what they made. Even small kids can wash veggies, stir, or tear lettuce. Older kids can chop, measure, and follow recipes.

4. Family meals matter more than the menu

The research is clear: families that eat together — even simply, even imperfectly — have better outcomes across health and school performance. Don't let perfect be the enemy of together.

5. Lead by example

Kids notice what's on your plate more than what's said about theirs. Modeling matters more than lectures.

6. Make water the default

Replace sugary drinks with water as the everyday default. Save juice and treats for occasions.

7. Plan ahead

A 10-minute meal-plan on Sunday saves hours of weeknight scrambling — and dramatically reduces the "fast food because it's 6 PM and there's nothing in the house" trap.

8. Don't ban — moderate

Outright bans create unhealthy fixations on the banned food. Teach moderation, and treats become treats again — not a constant battleground.

9. Celebrate small wins

Did your kid try a new vegetable today? Celebrate it. Did the family sit down together three nights this week? That's a win. Sustainable change is built from small, repeated wins — not from overnight overhauls.
