For generations, the YMCA has stood as a cornerstone of community, connection, and opportunity across America. In 2026, the YMCA of Klamath Falls proudly joins YMCAs nationwide in celebrating the organization's 175th anniversary — honoring a legacy rooted in service while continuing to invest in the future of the Klamath Basin.
While the YMCA movement began in 1844, the local story of the Klamath YMCA began in 1947. The organization was first headquartered in a humble tin shack located on the Balsiger Motors used car lot. Though modest in size, the mission was already clear: to create a place where individuals, children, and families could grow stronger in spirit, mind, and body.
Just one year later, the YMCA moved to the National Guard Armory, where it remained for three years as community support and programming continued to grow.
In April 1950, a transformational moment occurred when the William H. Fluhrer estate made it possible for the YMCA to purchase the former Fluhrer's Bakery building at 722 Pine Street. The move established a permanent home for the organization and laid the foundation for decades of community outreach, youth development, and wellness programming.
As the needs of Klamath Falls expanded, so did the YMCA. In 1969, the organization broke ground on its current Alameda Avenue location. The new facility officially opened its doors in January 1971, marking the beginning of a new era for the YMCA and the families it serves.
Over the years, the organization evolved into The Klamath County Family YMCA, a name that reflected its expanding role throughout the region. In 2012, a national rebranding initiative by the YMCA of the USA introduced a refreshed identity and unified messaging across the country. Today, the organization proudly operates as the YMCA of Klamath Falls — continuing its commitment to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.
But according to YMCA leadership, the organization has always been about far more than fitness equipment or gym memberships. "The YMCA is more than a gym," is a message echoed throughout the organization's 175th anniversary celebration and its newly launched 2026 Leadership Giving Campaign.
Every contribution made through the campaign directly impacts local families and individuals throughout the Klamath Basin:
- A $50 gift can sponsor a child for lifesaving swim lessons.
- $120 provides a senior citizen with a four-month membership to stay active and connected.
- $250 supports three children participating in youth sports programs.
- $350 empowers two children to attend one week of Summer Camp at the YMCA's Youth Development Center.
- $1,000 helps provide a yearly membership for a family of five.
These programs represent the heart of the YMCA's mission — ensuring financial barriers never prevent someone from accessing opportunities to learn, grow, and belong.
Today, the YMCA of Klamath Falls continues to serve thousands of community members through youth sports, aquatics, child care, summer camp, wellness programming, and community partnerships. From teaching children how to swim safely to creating spaces where families can thrive together, the YMCA remains deeply woven into the fabric of Klamath Falls.
As the organization celebrates 175 years of impact nationwide and nearly eight decades locally, the YMCA of Klamath Falls looks toward the future with the same community-first spirit that began in a small tin shack back in 1947.
Because at its core, the YMCA has never simply been a building. It has always been a place where community comes together.
