The moment her daughter asked to go on a bike ride, Terra Zumwalt didn't hesitate. Not even for a second.
There was no familiar flood of anxiety about getting tired or struggling up hills. No fear of embarrassment or failure. Just pure joy at the opportunity to share an active moment with her child.
It's a simple scene — but one that would have been impossible for the Terra of a few years ago.
"I Was Pretty Much Completely Sedentary"
"I was pretty much completely sedentary and stuck in a rut," Terra recalls. "I didn't put any time or effort into myself. I was focused on my family and put myself last."
The Terra of June 2023 — the photo in the YMCA's "before" — had been postponing her own wellbeing for years. Like a lot of moms. Like a lot of people who put everyone else first until they can't quite remember what it felt like to put themselves anywhere on the list.
The Invitation That Changed Everything
Terra's journey began with a single invitation from her husband and son to join them at the YMCA of Klamath Falls — just once.
That first workout was challenging. Especially facing herself in the mirrors. Especially being around people who already looked like they belonged in a gym.
But she came back the next day. And the day after.
Two Years In
Fast-forward to May 2025 — the photo in the YMCA's "after." Terra is unrecognizable from the Terra who walked through the YMCA doors that first day, but the real transformation isn't physical.
It's that she said yes to the bike ride without thinking. It's that she has the energy to actually live in her own life again. It's that her kids are seeing what it looks like to take care of yourself — without quitting on your family.
What Made It Stick
Terra credits a few things for the staying power of her transformation:
- The community — staff who learned her name, members who became friends
- Programming variety — group fitness, personal training, swim, walking, weight training. Variety kept it from feeling like punishment.
- Showing up, even when she didn't want to — and discovering most of the time she felt better after
- The Y's mission — meeting people where they are, not where someone else thinks they should be
Your "After" Starts Here
The YMCA of Klamath Falls' message is simple:
After the excuses. After the hesitation. After "someday."
YOUR "AFTER" STARTS HERE.
The YMCA is more than a gym — it's a community dedicated to helping you reach your goals. Whether you're looking to get stronger, feel better, connect with others, or simply take that first step, they're there to support your journey.
This is your moment. This is your "after." And it begins at the Y.
