IN VALOR THERE IS HOPE — those are the words etched onto a memorial that stands as a tribute to fallen law enforcement officers at the Klamath County Courthouse.
On May 1st, 2024, in the heart of Klamath Falls, Oregon, a solemn yet profound event took place — paying homage to the selfless individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
The 2024 Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, organized by retired officer Mike Angeli, served as a poignant reminder of the invaluable contributions and unwavering dedication of those who valiantly protect and serve our communities.
A Heartfelt Initiative Born from Personal Experience
For Mike Angeli, the Memorial held a deeply personal significance.
Having lost five dear friends and colleagues during his career, he understands first-hand the cost of law enforcement service. The Memorial isn't an abstract civic exercise for Mike — it's about specific people, specific families, and specific losses that the community lives with.
That personal investment is why the event has the gravity it does. It's not a ceremony being put on by people who haven't lived through it. It's a brother officer making sure his fallen friends — and every law enforcement officer who has given everything to this community — are remembered.
What the Memorial Did
The Memorial brought together:
- Active and retired law enforcement officers from across the basin
- Families of fallen officers — survivors, parents, children, spouses
- Community members paying respects
- Elected officials and civic leaders
- Honor guard, color guard, and ceremonial detail
The ceremony included formal recognition of fallen officers, presentations to surviving family members, and the kind of solemn structure that gives weight to what was being remembered.
Bridging Law Enforcement and Community
Beyond honoring the fallen, the Memorial served a second important purpose: fostering understanding and bridging the gap between law enforcement and the community they serve.
By participating in the Memorial, attendees gained a deeper appreciation for the inherent dangers and challenges that law enforcement officers face daily — from routine paperwork to life-threatening combat situations. The event was a powerful reminder of the unwavering dedication and sacrifices made by these brave individuals.
The Memorial also aimed to humanize law enforcement officers — reminding the community that they are fellow citizens with shared goals and aspirations: parents picking up kids from the same schools, neighbors at the same churches, members of the same youth-sports organizations, friends at the same restaurants.
By acknowledging the heavy burdens and traumas they endure, the event fostered empathy and understanding — paving the way for stronger community-police relationships.
Providing Solace and Support for Survivors
One of the primary objectives of the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial is to provide solace and support for the families of fallen officers.
Grief on the timeline of a line-of-duty death is not the grief of other losses. The badge, the uniform, the institution — they all carry their own weight in how families process and carry on. Memorials like Klamath County's give families:
- Recognition that their loved one's sacrifice is remembered
- Community with other surviving families who understand
- A regular gathering that anchors the year and keeps the memory present
That's not a small thing. For surviving families, knowing their loss is remembered by the community their loved one died protecting — every year, deliberately — matters.
Thank You, Mike Angeli
Organizing an event of this scale takes months of work, dozens of partnerships, and a willingness to do something hard for people you love.
Mike Angeli continues to do that work — year after year — and Klamath County is grateful for him.
To every officer who has served, who is serving, and who will serve: thank you.
To every family who has lived through the call no one wants to receive: we remember.
In valor there is hope.
