Permanent fences. You will hear that term used a lot regarding the styles of fences we make. Chain link, vinyl, and ornamental iron are a few examples of permanent fences. A permanent fence is one where the material will not warp, rot, or deteriorate under normal conditions.

But there is more to it than that.

Spec'd and Installed Correctly

A permanent fence must be spec'd and installed correctly:

  • Posts need to be of the proper size
  • Set below the frost line (critical in Klamath winters)
  • In a hole that will support the style and size of the fence and gate

Skip any of these and a "permanent" fence won't be permanent for long.

Why We're Big Fans of Chain-Link Fencing

Obviously, we are huge fans of chain-link fencing. It is a product with a lot of advantages:

  • Cost-effective — relatively inexpensive to manufacture, savings we can pass on to customers
  • Compact to ship and install — pieces are somewhat compact before installation, which helps ease transporting
  • Straightforward installation
  • Highly flexible — the flexibility of the product is a great help for difficult installations
  • Long-lasting and durable — galvanized chain link is a long-lasting and durable product
  • Modern coatings — vinyl-coated and color options now extend life and improve aesthetics

Vinyl Fencing

Vinyl fencing is another permanent option, prized for:

  • Zero maintenance — no painting, staining, or sealing
  • Won't rot or warp in Klamath's freeze-thaw cycles
  • Wide range of styles — privacy, picket, ranch rail, semi-private
  • Long warranties — many vinyl products carry lifetime warranties

The trade-off: higher upfront cost than wood, and proper installation is critical (cheap vinyl that's installed wrong will sag and warp).

Ornamental Iron

For homeowners who want security plus aesthetics, ornamental iron is unmatched:

  • High security — much harder to climb or breach than wood or vinyl
  • Long lifespan when properly powder-coated and maintained
  • Custom designs — gates and panels can be designed to match home architecture
  • Visibility — keeps the view while still securing the space (great for properties with views)

Gates Matter Too

A permanent fence is only as permanent as its gate. Gates are the first thing to fail on a poorly-built fence — sagging hinges, latches that don't latch, posts that lean over time.

Investing in quality gate hardware and properly sized gate posts is one of the smartest moves a homeowner can make. We always overspec gate posts compared to standard line posts for this reason.

What "Permanent" Doesn't Mean

Permanent doesn't mean maintenance-free forever. It means:

  • Won't warp in normal weather
  • Won't rot in normal soil/moisture conditions
  • Won't need replacement of major components within a normal lifespan

Routine maintenance (occasional pressure-washing, hinge oil, latch checks) still applies — and dramatically extends the life of every permanent-fence material.
