The Assistance League of Klamath Basin (ALKB) is an example of the incredible power of volunteerism. For over 30 years, this nonprofit has been dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children and their families in the Klamath Basin. Powered by the passion and dedication of its volunteers, and local support through donations, ALKB has been able to provide essential support and resources to those in need, truly changing lives.
Operation School Bell: Empowering Students Through New Clothing
One of the flagship programs of the Assistance League is Operation School Bell which provides new, school-appropriate clothing for students in need. Thanks to our volunteers, strong community donation support, partnerships with companies such as Fred Meyer and generous grants we are able to instill a sense of pride and confidence in students, allowing them to focus on their education without the worry of inadequate attire. ALKB serves 39 schools in the Klamath County and Klamath Falls City area, as well as Tulelake in Northern California, providing students the clothing they need to succeed.
During the 2019-2020 school year, Operation School Bell served 950 students. The following 2020-2021school year, the program saw an increased need due to the COVID-19 pandemic, wildfires, and price increases with over 1,450 students served. The impact continued to grow, with ALKB assisting over 1,700 during the 2021-2022 school year.
Active Shoes = Active Bodies: Promoting Healthy Lifestyles
As part of Operation School Bell, "Active Shoes = Active Bodies" encourages students to set and achieve goals to earn a shoe certificate, redeemable at a local sporting goods store. Incentivizing physical activity and healthy lifestyles, ALKB not only provides essential footwear but also fosters overall well-being among the students they serve.
Graduation Clothing Certificates: Celebrating Milestones
Recognizing the importance of celebrating milestones, each of the 11 area high schools receive certificates for selected seniors to shop for graduation clothing. Recipients are chosen by school counselors based on their efforts in being good students and citizens. This program ensures the graduates have appropriate attire for their special day which can also be used for job interviews in the future, setting them up for success beyond high school.
