Since 1944, the YMCA has been an integral part of the Klamath Falls community.

In 1970, a significant step was taken with the opening of the 24,000 sq ft facility at 1221 South Alameda Avenue. This central hub has long served the community — originally housing preschool and youth programs alongside fitness areas and an indoor pool.

Where We Are Today

The South Alameda facility is now facing significant repair needs — most urgently:

  • Replacement of two of its three roofs due to active leaks
  • Modernization of shower and locker room facilities
  • HVAC and mechanical updates across the building
  • Pool system upgrades to extend the life of one of the basin's most heavily-used aquatic facilities

These aren't cosmetic — they're the kind of infrastructure investments that determine whether a facility continues serving the community for the next 20 years or starts losing programs because the building can't support them.

Looking to the Future

The YMCA envisions creating a dedicated youth room — a vibrant space catering to children aged 5 to 12, offering recreational activities, mentorship opportunities, and the kind of belonging-focused programming that has always defined the Y's youth work.

That youth room would expand on existing programs:

  • Youth Development Center afterschool care
  • Preschool Promise
  • Youth sports leagues — basketball, soccer, T-ball, more
  • Swim lessons and the basin's most established aquatics program
  • Summer day camp and sports camps

Programs That Define the Y

The Y is more than a facility. It's:

  • The annual Community Campaign — which scholarships nearly 1,000 children and families every year, ensuring no one is turned away from programs because of cost
  • Senior fitness — group classes, water aerobics, gentle yoga
  • Personal training and small-group training
  • Adult programs — fitness, aquatics, and connection
  • Community partnerships — Diabetes Prevention Programs, healthcare collaborations, school partnerships

Why It Matters

The Y has been in the Klamath Basin for 80 years. Three generations of Klamath families have grown up there — learning to swim, playing their first organized sport, taking their first job as a lifeguard, bringing their own kids back through those doors.

That continuity is the YMCA's most valuable asset — and it requires investment to maintain.

How You Can Help

The Y's Community Campaign is open year-round. Whether you can donate, volunteer, attend the annual golf tournament, or sponsor a child's membership — every form of support directly translates to access for someone in the basin who needs the Y.
