My daughter Ellee had just turned 4 and she was ready to take on the world of organized sports.
She's a ball of energy and always eager to learn new things — so we decided to sign her up for the YMCA Little Kickers Soccer program. Let me tell you, it was a total hit.
Ellee had a blast making new friends, learning the basics of teamwork, and the importance of hard work. She even got to "score the goal" with her teammates.
The Program Format
The program lasted for six weeks and included:
- One-hour practices on Mondays and Wednesdays
- A weekly game on Saturdays at Ponderosa Field
I was lucky enough to be her assistant coach for the Bears team — and we had an amazing time together.
Ellee learned the value of perseverance and pushing herself to do her best, even when she felt tired.
She's already planning her next sport — but first, she wants to spend some time kayaking and maybe even catch her first fish during the summer break.

Why It Matters
Youth sports do something irreplaceable for kids:
- They get them off screens and into active, social, embodied experience
- They give them real adult mentors beyond their parents and teachers
- They teach failure and recovery in a low-stakes setting
- They build the foundation for lifelong physical activity habits
For Klamath Basin families, the YMCA Youth Sports Program is one of the most established, well-organized, and accessible options in the basin.
Membership and Scholarships
The YMCA's annual Community Campaign funds scholarship memberships for families who need them — ensuring that no child is turned away from youth sports because of family financial circumstance.
That access matters enormously. Youth sports outside the YMCA can be expensive — uniforms, equipment, league fees, travel. The Y's structure removes most of those barriers and keeps the door open for every Klamath kid.
