Spotlighting National Pet Month and the Perks of Pet-Ownership.

Written by Tanya Cheatham, MA, PCA

French poet and writer Anatole France once said the most loving words, “Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened ”, in which to illustrate the uniquely special, and to many, sacred relationship many have with their animal companions. How awesome is that there’s a monthly observation that highlights our furry and sometimes not so furry friends, helping to keep people informed about being responsible animal owners and raising awareness about pertinent animal related concerns. Certainly, those who share the same sentiments as expressed in the quote by France, will place a great importance on ensuring their special animal is showered with validation and love for holding such a pivotal role in the family structure. National Pet Month places focus on the important value that animals add to our lives and families on a daily and consistent basis. Many of the festivities also serve to shed light on the ever-growing population of animals currently waiting in shelters to be adopted.

According to the National Pet Owners Survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association (2021-2022), 70 percent of households in the United States have some form of a pet, whether a dog, cat, fish, bird, or other domesticated animal that can fit into the category according to the definition. The very first survey ever done back in 1988 brought in a 56 percent overall total, comparatively speaking. This demonstrates a positive trend of Americans to seek out an animal companion with majority acknowledging they have at least one of some type. For those who have never had the opportunity; or who are skeptical about whether it would be appropriate for yourself or family, this article will highlight the most noted advantages from the research as well as demonstrate the positive correlation shown in pet ownership to be gained immediately or over the duration of time. It’s also very interesting to fascinating to the see the powerful connection between the body, mind and spirit which is impacted through animal ownership. For most, the experience gained through the connection is invaluable and reflects exactly what Anatole France was saying in his quote. Although the list of associated benefits found were inexhaustible, those adding value in areas significant to improving overall health and wellness will be mentioned.
