For Jim Johnston, the journey into the fitness industry began on a global scale. As a former partner in National Fitness, he spent years promoting health clubs worldwide. But in November of 1995, at just 27 years old, Jim found his permanent home in the Klamath Falls community when he purchased the facility now known as National Fitness Health Club. Thirty-one years later, it stands proudly as the largest facility in the basin dedicated to fitness and wellness—and a true cornerstone of the local community.
Under Jim’s leadership, National Fitness Health Club operates on a refreshingly simple philosophy: it is a club for everyone. Regardless of age, size, or background, the primary goal has always been to make every person who walks through the doors feel entirely welcome. The facility is designed to offer well-rounded services that allow members to safely grow and progress, no matter where their fitness journey begins. Jim’s personal advice aligns perfectly with this mission: “A body in motion stays in motion. Most importantly, be kind to everyone, regardless of whether they look or act like you.”
This welcoming, inclusive environment has fostered deep community roots. Jim proudly notes that some members have been training at the club for more than three decades. Having grown up alongside these longtime members, he treasures the lifelong bonds formed within the facility’s walls. What brings Jim the most joy in his work is witnessing these personal transformations firsthand—seeing people light up when they reach their goals, come off medications, and ultimately experience a dramatically improved quality of life.
At its core, National Fitness Health Club is a deeply rooted family affair. Jim notes that his greatest inspiration in life is being a father to his three children, ages 27, 25, and 17. All three currently work at the facility, with his oldest daughter running day-to-day operations as the club manager. When he isn’t managing the business, Jim can often be found giving back to local youth as a head high school football coach—a role he has cherished for 19 years—or spending time with his four-and-a-half-year-old golden retriever.
Beyond helping individuals achieve their health goals, Jim is incredibly proud of the broader impact the club has had over the past 31 years. From employing countless locals to generously supporting Klamath Falls schools, band programs, sports teams, and charitable auctions, National Fitness Health Club’s legacy extends far beyond its gym floors. As Jim reflects on the countless success stories from the past three decades, one thing remains certain: National Fitness Health Club is dedicated to being there for the community and giving back every step of the way.
