Building Healthy Communities: A Local Therapist's Perspective
By: Chelsea Garrison, MSW, LCSW
Accessing mental health resources can be a challenge. Many people may feel hesitant or unsure about seeking therapy due to common misconceptions. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and longtime Klamath Falls resident, I want to challenge those misconceptions and provide some helpful tips for anyone who may be considering counseling in the Klamath Falls area.
Tip #1: Finding the Right Therapist is Key
One of the biggest challenges of accessing mental health resources is finding the right therapist. It's essential to find a therapist who is a good fit for you and who understands your unique needs and concerns. When looking for a therapist, it's important to consider factors like their areas of expertise, treatment approach, and availability. It's important to find someone who aligns with your needs and preferences.
Tip #2: Therapy is a Proactive Step Towards Improving Your Health
Another common misconception about therapy is that it's a sign of weakness or only an option for people in crisis. In fact, therapy is a proactive step towards improving your mental health and well-being. It's not just about treating mental illness, but also about building skills and strategies for coping with life's challenges. Whether you're dealing with stress, relationship issues, grief, or just feeling stuck in life, therapy can help. A therapist is there to listen and help you work through your challenges, without judgement or bias. They can provide an outside perspective and help you develop new coping skills and strategies. Therapy can be a safe space to talk about things you might not feel comfortable sharing with friends or family.
Tip #3: It Doesn’t Have to be Forever
It's also important to understand that seeking therapy doesn't mean you have to attend sessions forever. Some people may only need a few sessions to work through a specific issue or gain some coping strategies while others may benefit from ongoing therapy. It's up to you to decide what works best for you.
Tip #4: Self-Care is Key, Both In and Outside of Therapy Sessions
While therapy can be incredibly helpful, it's not a cure-all. It's important to practice self-care on a regular basis, whether that means taking time for yourself to relax or seeking out additional resources like support groups or wellness classes. Self-care looks different for everyone, but some common strategies include:
- Participating in physical activity.
- Spending time with loved ones.
- Engaging in creative activities like painting or writing.
- Practicing mindfulness or meditation.
Tip #5: Feeling Lonely? Build Community in a Group
Group therapy can be a great way to connect with others who may be experiencing similar issues and gain support from a community. It's often more affordable than individual therapy and can provide a sense of belonging and understanding.
Final Thoughts
I want to encourage anyone in the Klamath Basin who is considering therapy to take that first step. It's okay to ask for help, and there are resources available.
