Farewell to Klamath Basin: Celebrating Dave and Niki Sampson’s Legacy
"Goodbye and thank you for touching our lives and making us better human beings." With these heartfelt words, Dave and Niki Sampson bid farewell to the Klamath Basin community. Their departure marks the end of an era, but their legacy of generosity, resilience, and unwavering commitment to making the world a better place will endure.
As they prepare to embark on a new chapter in a smaller town closer to their dispersed family, it is fitting to reflect on their journey, their remarkable contributions, and the profound impact they have had on countless individuals and families in Klamath County.
A Journey Rooted in Love and Partnership
Dave and Niki Sampson’s story began in 1994 at Lake of the Woods. The serene and scenic location set the stage for a lifetime of shared dreams and aspirations. Their immediate connection blossomed into a profound love, leading to their marriage just a year later. Over the next three decades, they not only built a strong and loving family but also became integral members of the Klamath community.
Dave, who nearly pursued a career in professional baseball, shifted his focus to more community-oriented endeavors after returning to Oregon. Niki, whose background included working at KLAD radio, found her true calling in philanthropy and community service. Together, they spearheaded numerous initiatives, most notably their work at the Klamath/Lake Counties Food Bank.
The Heart of the Community: Klamath/Lake Counties Food Bank
For over two decades, Dave and Niki Sampson dedicated their lives to the Klamath/Lake Counties Food Bank, an organization synonymous with hope and support for many families. Dave, with his towering presence and gentle demeanor, handled the logistics and operations, often referred to as the "back of the house." Niki, with her vibrant personality and empathetic nature, managed the "front of the house," engaging directly with those in need and fostering a supportive environment. Their combined efforts meant the Food Bank not only provided essential sustenance but also empowered individuals to overcome their challenges. Niki’s proactive approach aimed at addressing the root causes of food insecurity, focusing on programs that enabled self-sufficiency and resilience. Her philosophy was clear: “It is so important to choose to be a survivor, not a perpetual victim because others take pity on you. When you are painted into the corner of “victim” you give the power of your life away. Remember you do have the power to choose.”
The incredibly effective Food Bank teamwork was interrupted when Dave, after years of enduring non-stop pain, received a diagnosis of degenerative spine disease, forcing him to step down after 22 years. Despite this setback, his commitment to the community and the Food Bank never wavered, as he continued to find ways to contribute, adapting his activities to accommodate his condition.
Family and Personal Reflections
The Sampsons' family life has been as rich and fulfilling as their professional endeavors. Niki speaks fondly of their three grown sons and their wonderful grandchildren, aged 3 to 14. She humorously recalls how their immediate family could once fit into a Volkswagen Bug, with room to spare for friends.
Dave, ever the poet at heart, penned a touching tribute to their relationship, encapsulating the love and devotion that have defined their years together:
The year after I turned twenty-three, at a lake and amongst the trees, I found the other half of me. Sweet and kind, she buckled my knees and flowed through my soul like a summer breeze.
We fell in love and tied the knot, and my father’s advise, I never forgot. When I was young his words to me…Treat your woman like a lady and your lady like a queen.
She’s been kind and she’s been sweet and has always been true to me. She made me tremble and made me sweat, the kind of girl I thought I’d never get.
At first I was nervous and a little bit scared, until I learned
how much she cared. Not just about me but everyone, and that’s when I realized that I’d found the one.
We worked and we played and raised our kids, just like other families did. Time went on and together we grew and I became more attached to you.
Life threw us curves and did us some wrongs, but facing
them together made us more strong. Now we are older, enjoying our years and the love we share has brought me to tears.
Each tomorrow is a new lease on life, and I promise to
cherish you, my beautiful wife.
