When you look at the back of your tortilla bag, you'll find preservatives, gums, and conditioners that are necessary to maintain a long shelf-life and keep them fresh. This 5-ingredient recipe takes only 10 minutes to prepare, is super simple, and uses common staples you already have in your kitchen — so you can have fresh, homemade, nutritious whole-food tortillas to add to any meal.
Ingredients
- 200g unbleached white flour
- ½ tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ cup hot water
- 28g melted butter or alternative
Steps
- Whisk together your dry ingredients in a large bowl.
- Add your melted butter (I used an oat milk butter alternative) and hot water.
- Combine until a dough is formed.
- Knead on a lightly floured surface into 4–5 smooth balls. If it's too sticky, add a sprinkle of flour. (For larger tortillas, do 4.)
- Let them rest covered in the bowl for 25–30 minutes.
- Use a tortilla press or roller to press them. Don't worry about them being a perfect circle.
- Place them onto a hot skillet or non-stick pan — no oil — until golden bubbles form on the underside, then flip them.
- Finish all of your tortillas and enjoy. After they are completely cooled, store them in an airtight bag or container in the fridge for 5–7 days.
